Urban Restoration Enhancement Corporation congratulates the graduates of the 2021 College & Career Ready Pre-Law Institute for successfully completing all program requirements and concluding the institute with a virtual mock trial earlier this month. This program was offered for the fourth consecutive year through a partnership with Southern University Law Center.
The 2021 Pre-Law Institute graduates are Jakirah Johnson, Chloe LaCarriere, Marley Lewis, Condoleezza Semien, and Melvin Britten IV.
Throughout the Pre-Law Institute, graduates learned the foundations of law, civics, and criminal justice; explored career paths through virtual sessions with local legal professionals; analyzed legal and social issues; participated in a book club that focused on truth, racial healing, and transformation; and contributed to group projects.
Program highlights included a virtual panel and tour provided by Kean Miller LLP; participation and attendance in the “The Law and Your Community” webinar presented by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); and facilitating a criminal mock trial presided over by the Honorable Gail Grover, Judge of Juvenile Court Division B, East Baton Rouge Parish.
The Pre-Law Institute was led by program instructor and SULC student Shanelle Staten, program volunteer Chastity George, and program manager Courtney Hunt. The initiative thrives with support from community partners such as Southern University Law Center, City of Baton Rouge, Huey & Angelina Wilson Foundation, Kean Miller LLP, Louisiana Department of Education, ReCast of Greater Baton Rouge, Capital One, Baton Rouge Bar Association, and Culture Bridge.
